There are whisper weight cashmere scarves, glen checked cashmere mufflers, chalk striped angora and lambswool mufflers as well as several tartan patterns, Kelim printed silks, paisley wool and silks, ancient madders and the usual solid cashmeres just to name a few. Any of them will handsomely cover the vee of an overcoat or fill in the chest of an odd jacket worn without a necktie.

As with neckties, the first scarf for a coat ought to be relatively plain as more memorable styles may shout that they are worn every day. The second of course can stand out a bit.

Scarves in hand, there are several ways to accomplish said covering or filling. Tie either scarves or mufflers (the 63" version of the 72" scarf) in a loose four in hand with the front blade thrown over the knot, or in a Parisian fold (double the scarf and wrap it around your neck before putting the open ends through the loop and then tighten) just to name two. Be flagrant about it - a scarf may seem noisy at first but, just like wearing a hat, the feeling that everyone is watching will disappear after a few days (they will be watching, but only in admiration).

Scarves of course tend only to be offered in all their glory during fall and early winter. Act now, or risk forever asking yourself why you did not pull the trigger on that spectacular Kelim while it was still available.
