Among mine are the creeping apartment remodelling project, which continues to grow both in terms of the scope of work and the time required to manage it. You see, we did not hire a true general contractor because all we were going to do was refinish some floors, install new windows and build out the closets. Then came new tile for the sun room and entry and of course the floors needed replacement rather than refinishing and my wife's closet doors needed to be changed. That was followed by the new bathroom vanities which required rebuilding the walls so they could be hung. And new tile, and of course we might as well replace the other fixtures while we are at it. Just to name a few.

During this time my only diversion has been the occasional dinner out, which isn't easy either as at this time of the year reservations two weeks ahead are a must for the places I like unless one is willing to eat mid-afternoon or after other people have retired for the evening. But persistance wins out. and my blazer and I found ourselves enjoying a far too rare evening recently.

To my mind, those construction-free occasions are when the navy blue coat and gray trousers truly come into their own. Too informal for the office and too dressy for most other daytime activities, they work best in my opinion for special weekend lunches, cocktails, dinner and jacket-worthy but not too formal entertainment (the symphony is OK, but a suit is probably better for the opera if you are into fine-tuning this sort of thing).

I like to wear white shirts with my blazers as they say 'evening' rather than 'I just came from work.' Reddish oxfords with some texture to the leather like the pair in the photo make great day-time blazer shoes, and black monks or elastic sided slip-ons strike the right note after dark. And a block striped necktie is probably my favorite way to complement the jacket. The objective is to strike a look that is mid-way between the odd jacket and the suit.

Combine with gin, shaken rather than stirred, and feel your cares slip away.
