But one in particular resonates, the wry chat-up line in opening song Cottonopolis + Promises: "Won't you let me be your Nico?" It snags because the band's Northern Irish singer, D Lucille Campbell, sounds uncannily like the Warhol superstar, her nasal inflections and sonorous "woah-woah"s lifted straight from the Velvet Underground collaborations and Chelsea Girls. Campbell's androgynous voice is the Manchester-based sextet's most distinctive feature, but rarely is it allowed any breathing space. Instead, she is swamped by glittery keyboards, jangly guitars and a superfluity of extraneous sounds.
